Alleviate and eliminate Global Poverty

Imagine if...

Poor populations had access to rigorous primary and secondary education

Meet Mulago Foundation

Mulago Foundation is a leader in philanthropy focused on global poverty. Mulago has identified several best-in-class organizations pursuing effective strategies to alleviate and eliminate global poverty.

Why this cause needs your support

Nobody needs to be told that poverty is a problem. 1.3 billion people live on under $1.25 a day and we all know the suffering this creates - children die, families starve, and students complete school unable to read a simple sentence. But it is possible to make a real dent in the problems that face the poorest people. Mulago looks for scalable...

Raise awareness

The need is now

5.9 million children

In 2015, 5.9 million children under age 5 died. The big drivers of these deaths include pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. All of these illnesses have simple, affordable solutions.

The goal of this Fund is to alleviate and eliminate poverty in the global south.

To accomplish this goal, this Fund is supporting the following strategies

Education

Poor students have less time with teachers, fewer learning materials and lower learning outcomes. We fund organizations that provide both primary and secondary education directly to the poor. We look for affordable solutions that provide rigorous learning solutions targeted at the poorest children.

Supporting some of the best organizations

mothers2mothers uses “Mentor Mothers” – HIV+ moms – to teach HIV+ mothers-to-be how to assure that babies arrive into the world free of HIV – and stay that way. Peer-to-peer support has proven one of the most successful ways to prevent mother-to-fetus HIV transmission, and now m2m is adapting their model to achieve family health beyond pregnancy and birth. Moreover, m2m is serious about scaling up success: they are teaching other organizations – ministries of health and big NGOs – how to adapt and use the model in their own settings. Today, 1 in 4 HIV+ women who deliver in m2m’s seven countries of operation receive education and support from a Mentor Mother.

Living Goods creates an Avon Lady-like network of women going door-to-door selling health products, doing health education and making clinic referrals and they’ve reduced child mortality by 27% in East African communities where they work. Living Goods’ village based health entrepreneurs deliver dramatically better health outcomes at lower cost. Their approach blends best practices from business and public health: Agent financial incentives are aligned with better health outcomes, and efficient inventory management ensures they have the medicines their customers need at a price they can afford.
